The ADI Part 2 test is essential because it verifies that your driving skills meet a high standard, which is crucial before you can teach others. If your own driving ability isn’t up to scratch, it raises the question: how can you effectively instruct learners? This test ensures you’re not just capable of driving, but that you do so with the precision and safety necessary to guide new drivers. Passing this test confirms your readiness to set a strong example for your future students.

What to Bring to Your ADI Part 2 Test

Make sure to bring:

Your UK driving licence
If you lose it, apply for a replacement, which could take up to 15 days.

A suitable car
Ensure your vehicle meets the test requirements.

Without these, your test will be cancelled without a refund.

Additional Notes:
If you don’t have a photocard licence, bring your passport and paper licence. For Northern Ireland licences, bring both the photocard and paper counterpart.

What Happens During the ADI Part 2 Test

The ADI Part 2 test is a detailed assessment of your driving skills, covering five key areas:

1. Eyesight Check

You’ll need to read a number plate from a distance of 27 metres. Failing this will mean an automatic fail.

2. ‘Show Me, Tell Me’ Questions

You’ll be asked 5 vehicle safety questions known as the ‘show me, tell me’ questions. These test that you know how to carry out basic safety tasks.

You’ll be asked:

  • 3 ‘tell me’ questions at the start of your test, before you start driving
  • 2 ‘show me’ questions while you’re driving – for example, showing how to wash the windscreen using the car controls and wipers

You’ll get a driving fault for each incorrect answer you give.

3. General Driving Ability

You’ll need to demonstrate to the examiner that you can:

  • Handle the vehicle’s controls with expertise
  • Follow correct road procedures
  • Anticipate and respond appropriately to other road users
  • Make sound judgments regarding distance, speed, and timing
  • Consider the safety and convenience of others
  • Drive in an environmentally friendly manner

You’ll be tested in a variety of road and traffic conditions, including motorways or dual carriageways if available.

4. Manoeuvres

The examiner will ask you to perform two of the following reversing maneuvers:

  • Parallel park at the side of the road.
  • Reverse into a parking bay and then drive out.
  • Drive into a parking bay and then reverse out.
  • Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for about two car lengths, and then rejoin the traffic.

5. Independent Driving

For about 20 minutes, you’ll drive independently, following either:

  • Directions from a sat nav (provided and set up by the examiner)
  • Traffic signs

The examiner will inform you which method to follow.

Additional Points:

Sat Nav
You cannot use your own; only the one provided by the examiner.

Going Off Route
Taking a wrong turn won’t affect your result unless it involves a driving fault. The examiner will help you get back on track.

Obscured Traffic Signs
If signs are blocked, the examiner will give directions until you can see the next one.

What if I make mistakes during the Test?

If you make a mistake during your test, don’t worry—you can continue. It might not impact your result unless the mistake is serious. The examiner will only stop the test if they believe your driving poses a danger to other road users.

Faults and Test Results

There are three types of faults you can make during the test:

  • Driving Fault: A minor issue that could become serious if repeated.
  • Dangerous Fault: Involves actual danger to you, the examiner, or others.
  • Serious Fault: Something potentially dangerous.

Pass Mark

To pass, you must:

  • Make no more than six driving faults.
  • Avoid any serious or dangerous faults.

If You Pass

The examiner will provide feedback on any faults and give you a copy of the driving test report. You can then book your ADI Part 3 test or apply for a trainee instructor licence.

If You Fail

The examiner will explain your faults. You can retake the test, but if you fail three times, you must retake and pass the ADI Part 1 test again after a two-year wait.

Found an instructor quickly. Julie was a fantastic teacher all the way through and set me up perfectly to pass first time. Special shout out the guys in the office and to Lisa who squeezed me in for a few last minute drives before my test.

Highly recommend.

Highly recommend Shift Driving School. They were an absolute pleasure to deal with from start to finish. Special shout out to my instructor Hassan, who taught me from scratch in just under 6 months. I had no previous driving experience at all and he talked through the steps and skills needed clearly, always supportively pushing me to be my best. Delighted to have passed at first attempt! Couldn’t have done it without the team at Swift and Hassan. Thank you!

I've had an absolutely fantastic experience with Shift from start to finish. I was assigned an instructor incredibly quickly after my first enquiry, and from the very first lesson to passing my test (first time with no faults!) I was supported incredibly well.

Simon helped me go from someone that had panic attacks after attempting lessons a few years ago, to being so confident behind the wheel that I have no reservations about going out and driving.

It was an absolute pleasure learning to drive with Shift and I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone.

I had an excellent experience with Shift Driving School. My instructor, William Stanton, was professional, patient, and incredibly supportive throughout my lessons. He explained everything clearly, helped me build confidence step by step, and always made sure I understood not just how to drive, but why things are done a certain way.

Thanks to his guidance, I passed my test on the first attempt! I highly recommend Shift Driving School to anyone looking for a calm, knowledgeable, and reliable instructor.

Today I passed my test!! I've have really enjoyed my lessons with Shift! There was a little bit of a wait but now I know why. I passed first time with my instructor (I had two because my availability changed) and you can tell by the way all of the instructors are with eachother that this is just a great school. The app is really good too. Would definitely recommend Shift Driving School.

Absolutely amazing driving school! Simon was brilliant from start to finish, and I couldn’t have wished for a better instructor. I had a previous bad experience with a different driving school which left me feeling anxious and lacking in confidence, but from my very first lesson with Shift, Simon made me feel at ease and supported me all of the way through. He has such a lovely, calm manner, is suuuuuper patient, and has an amazing way of explaining things differently if you don’t quite understand or if something isn’t sticking. My work shifts changed quite a lot due to changing jobs mid-way through my lessons however Simon was so good at swapping things about in order to fit my schedule and really did whatever he could to allow me to get the most out of my lessons.

I Just passed my test first time and I owe all of my credit to Simon. Lewis also sat in for a mock test last week, and he was also amazing - super calm and made me feel really at ease. Could absolutely not recommend learning with this driving school enough, and I’m going to really miss my lessons with Simon going forward! This is such a big achievement for me and I can’t thank the driving school and Simon enough ☺️❤️

Passed my test today on my first attempt and wanted to say a huge thank you to my instructor Ciaran! He was absolutely fantastic, really patient, and taught me to drive and manage my anxiety at the same time which was not an easy task! I would definitely recommend shift driving school, I started out with no experience driving and massively nervous and now I’m a confident full fledged driver!

I honestly cannot thank the team enough.

Simon was my instructor and I felt comfortable with him right from the start. He was incredibly flexible around my work schedule, always fitting lessons in when I needed them, and he adapted his teaching style to whatever helped me learn each new skill. He is extremely knowledgeable and always had great tips and explanations that made everything so much easier to understand. I genuinely never thought I would become a driver, especially learning in my 40s, but Simon gave me the confidence and belief that I could do it. We also had such a good laugh on our lessons and I will really miss them now I have passed. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is nervous, unsure or doubting themselves.

I also had Lewis for one of my mock tests and he instantly put me at ease. He is really easy to get along with and gave clear, helpful feedback that I really appreciated.

Alex was brilliant from the very beginning. I first dealt with him when I enquired about lessons and even though there was a waitlist he was really helpful with timings and getting everything organised. The app, payments and communication were all smooth and straightforward. He also took me out on a mock test and again I felt completely comfortable and I took all of his feedback on board.

One thing that really stands out about this company is the genuine positivity and support from everyone. Each instructor was rooting for me along the way and when you see them all out on lessons you can tell they have a real sense of camaraderie and team spirit.

I would recommend this driving school to anyone. They have been amazing from start to finish.
