The DVLA has rolled out an updated online service enabling drivers to renew their car tax even if they’ve lost their logbook (V5C) and tax reminder (V11). Previously, drivers without these documents had to call the DVLA or wait several days for a replacement V5C, which delayed the process.
With this new system, drivers can access a streamlined online portal where they can request a new V5C and pay their car tax at once. This eliminates the wait time for many drivers, provided that no changes to the registered keeper’s details are required. The car tax will be approved immediately upon completion, and a replacement V5C will still arrive by post.
Julie Lennard, Chief Executive at DVLA, explained that the change reflects their commitment to enhancing digital convenience: “This update ensures drivers who misplace their V5C can quickly get a replacement and renew their vehicle tax with ease.”
This new tool complements the DVLA’s recent introduction of digital vehicle tax reminders, allowing motorists to opt for email or SMS notifications rather than waiting on a paper reminder. These updates are part of the DVLA’s secure Driver and Vehicles Account Service, where drivers can easily view their driving license information, monitor the tax and MOT status of registered vehicles, adjust contact preferences, and set up digital reminders.
