The Department for Transport (DfT) has released its latest road casualty statistics for the year ending June 2024, revealing a mix of positive trends and troubling issues. While overall road fatalities and casualties have slightly decreased, incidents involving e-scooters remain a growing concern.

Key Highlights from the DfT Report

Road fatalities
1,607 deaths were recorded in road collisions, marking a 2% decline compared to the previous year.

Killed or seriously injured (KSI)
Police recorded 29,540 KSI casualties, showing little change from the year ending June 2023.

Total casualties
Across all severities, there were 128,920 casualties, a 4% decrease.

E-Scooters in Focus

Despite the overall decline in casualties, incidents involving e-scooters have drawn significant attention:

E-scooter casualties
There were 1,194 recorded casualties among riders, including six fatalities.

Collisions involving e-scooters
These dropped slightly from 1,413 in 2023 but remain a major concern for road safety.

Other Findings

The DfT data sheds light on broader road safety trends:

Fatalities by vehicle type:

    • 45% were car occupants.
    • 24% were pedestrians.
    • 20% were motorcyclists.
    • 5% were pedal cyclists.

Demographics:

    • 75% of fatalities were male.
    • The most affected age groups were 30 to 49-year-old men (332 fatalities) and women over 70 (136 fatalities, a 7% decline).

Young drivers at risk
24% of fatalities and 28% of casualties involved drivers aged 17 to 29.

Cyclist fatalities
These saw a 5% drop, the biggest improvement among vehicle types.

Striking the Balance on E-Scooter Regulation

As e-scooters become more common, their role in road safety cannot be ignored. Advocates argue they are a sustainable transport solution, but critics point to their growing contribution to serious injuries and fatalities. Calls for stricter regulations, including mandatory training and better infrastructure, are gaining momentum.

Should there be stricter regulations around e-scooter use in Great Britain? How can we balance their benefits with safety concerns?

Amazing service and Phil was a first rate instructor. I rang and had lessons later that week. I've had several instructors over the year but Phil made me feel at ease and taught me so many things of thers didn't. Passed my test after a few weeks of teaching. Can't recommend this school high enough. Thanks again Phil!

Highly recommend Shift Driving School. They were an absolute pleasure to deal with from start to finish. Special shout out to my instructor Hassan, who taught me from scratch in just under 6 months. I had no previous driving experience at all and he talked through the steps and skills needed clearly, always supportively pushing me to be my best. Delighted to have passed at first attempt! Couldn’t have done it without the team at Swift and Hassan. Thank you!

Had a great experience with Shift, got assigned an instructor quickly and Ciaran has been absolutely brilliant. He always stayed calm, explained things really clearly and was incredibly patient with me, especially when I was anxious about something. It made the learning process fun and I passed first time thanks to his efforts!

I'd definitely recommend shift to anyone in Gateshead/Newcastle. My instructor was Paul Malone, and he done a brilliant job getting me ready for my test. Paul was always good at fitting in lessons around my schedule. Also enjoyed the friendly banter and easy-going attitude during lessons.

Cheers Paul and shift driving school for getting me on the road 👍🏽
