Gateshead Flyover Closed

The Gateshead flyover, a vital section of the A167 Gateshead Highway, has been closed indefinitely following a structural inspection that revealed a “potential risk to safety.” Built in the 1960s, the flyover has shown significant signs of concrete deterioration, prompting serious concerns from structural engineers about its ability to safely carry traffic.

This sudden closure is expected to cause widespread disruption, particularly as the Gateshead flyover closure coincides with the busy Monday morning commute, leading to what is being dubbed “Monday mayhem.”

Impact of the Gateshead Flyover Closure

The closure affects the stretch of the A167 Gateshead Highway between the Park Lane and Five Bridges roundabouts, as well as the road running directly beneath the flyover. While these sections are now closed to traffic, the roundabouts themselves remain open. This ensures that traffic can still move east and west, connecting key routes such as the A184 Felling Bypass, the Tyne Bridge, and the A1.

The council has stated that while they regret the disruption caused, the safety of the traveling public must come first.

Why Was the Gateshead Flyover Closed?

The Gateshead flyover has been regularly inspected over the years, with engineers previously determining that it could safely remain in use despite visible signs of aging and concrete wear. However, during an inspection by consultant structural engineers earlier this week, new issues were identified that indicated an immediate risk to public safety.

The council acknowledged that the closure is significant, given the importance of the Gateshead flyover in connecting traffic between Newcastle, Gateshead, and surrounding areas.

Commuters Brace for Monday Mayhem

As the Gateshead flyover closure comes into effect, the transport network is bracing for a challenging start to the working week. Dubbed “Monday mayhem” by local media, the closure is expected to lead to severe congestion on alternative routes.

Motorists are strongly advised to plan ahead and avoid the area if possible. Gateshead Council is urging commuters to work from home wherever feasible to reduce the strain on the transport network. Those who must travel are encouraged to use public transport or explore alternative routes.

Gateshead Council’s Advice for Drivers

To help drivers navigate the disruption caused by the Gateshead flyover closure, Gateshead Council has recommended the use of the One Network map available on its website. This map provides real-time updates on diversions and road closures.

You can access the map and additional roadwork updates here.

Inspections and Next Steps

Additional inspections of the Gateshead flyover are scheduled for Sunday and Monday. These assessments will determine the extent of the damage and help council officials decide the next steps, including whether repair or demolition is necessary.

Gateshead Council has pledged to minimize disruption where possible and provide regular updates to commuters and residents.

What This Means for Commuters

The closure of the Gateshead flyover is expected to have significant repercussions for local travel. Diversions have been put in place to manage traffic flow, but delays are anticipated. The council is urging patience and cooperation from drivers during this period.

Would definitely recommend Shift & my instructor Ciaran!

Shift were quick to come back to me with my initial queries and getting me set up with an instructor. The driving school app is really intuitive and easy to use which was great.

Ciaran was always calm, patient and made me feel at ease. He was happy to answer any questions I had, go over things I felt unsure or unconfident about and it really felt like he went the extra mile to make sure I was ready for my test.

I passed my test and feel like a confident driver thanks to Ciaran's support and guidance throughout.

Highly recommend Shift Driving School. They were an absolute pleasure to deal with from start to finish. Special shout out to my instructor Hassan, who taught me from scratch in just under 6 months. I had no previous driving experience at all and he talked through the steps and skills needed clearly, always supportively pushing me to be my best. Delighted to have passed at first attempt! Couldn’t have done it without the team at Swift and Hassan. Thank you!

Found an instructor quickly. Julie was a fantastic teacher all the way through and set me up perfectly to pass first time. Special shout out the guys in the office and to Lisa who squeezed me in for a few last minute drives before my test.

Highly recommend.

I've had an absolutely fantastic experience with Shift from start to finish. I was assigned an instructor incredibly quickly after my first enquiry, and from the very first lesson to passing my test (first time with no faults!) I was supported incredibly well.

Simon helped me go from someone that had panic attacks after attempting lessons a few years ago, to being so confident behind the wheel that I have no reservations about going out and driving.

It was an absolute pleasure learning to drive with Shift and I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone.

I had an excellent experience with Shift Driving School. My instructor, William Stanton, was professional, patient, and incredibly supportive throughout my lessons. He explained everything clearly, helped me build confidence step by step, and always made sure I understood not just how to drive, but why things are done a certain way.

Thanks to his guidance, I passed my test on the first attempt! I highly recommend Shift Driving School to anyone looking for a calm, knowledgeable, and reliable instructor.
